Jodhpur, the sun city of Rajasthan is mainly known for the majestic Mehrangarh Fort located at a hillock overlooking the city.
The construction of the fort was started by Rao Jodha and it was completed by Maharajas Jaswant Singh. The fort tells a saga of rich past, once the brave Marwar Rajput ruled in Jodhpur. To reach the main gate of the fort, one has to cross seven gates.
A 17 feet thick and 68 feet high wall cover the Mehrangarh Fort, still the invaders dared to attack this fort. When entering the gates, one sees the marks of siege on the walls of the gate. The palaces of the fort are known for the intricate carvings and courtyards. The Moti Mahal of the palace houses the Sringar Chowki, the royal throne of Jodhpur and the palace has a carved stone screen. Umaid Vilas has the Rajput miniature paintings and Ajit Villas displays the musical instruments and the royal costumes. Umaid Vilas and Ajit Vilas are connected by an amazing mirror room.
The Phool Mahal treasures the Jodhpur Coat of Arms. The walls of this palace are covered with paintings which depict various musical moods. The Maan Villas of the fort exhibits the Rathore armory and the 'Tent room'. The tent room is a Mughal campaign tent and Jaswant Singh wrested it from Aurangzeb in a battle. It is made of red velvet and gold thread.
The Mehrangarh Fort museum has a collection of palanquins, howdahs, royal cradles, miniatures, musical instruments, costumes and furniture. One will see some memoirs of the Jodhpur Polo team featured in the miniature paintings.
