Ajmer Sharif is a renowned pilgrimage destination in Rajasthan visited not only by the Muslims; people of all religions visit this shrine due to its belief and purity. Urs is a religious festival celebrated in memory of the Sufi saint Khwaja Muinuddin Christi popularly known as “Gareeb Nawaaz” in Ajmer. The Dargah Sharif of Ajmer is the burial place of the Muslim saints and Urs Fair is one the most renowned Muslim fairs in India. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built a mosque inside the Dargah.
Urs, the death anniversary is held annually during the first six days of Rajab in the 7th month of Islamic calendar which usually falls in the month of May at Ajmer Dargah. Rose water is used to wash the tomb on the first day of Rajab. Then embroidered silk clothes cover the tomb. The devotees offer nazrana in form of jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste, perfumes, chadar, ghilaph, and neema at this holy shrine. The sufi singers sings ballads in praise of the great deeds of the saint which makes the environment heavenly. At the concluding day firecrackers are lit and poets recite a poetic creation called mushaira which are dedicated to the saint Khwaja. In the evening a mass prayer is held.
