Pushkar holy town located near Ajmer Sharif of Rajasthan is a pilgrimage abode for the Hindus. It is located on the bank of the Pushkar Lake. The main attractions are the temples and the annual Pushkar Full Moon Fair held at the Kartrik Purnima. The Pushkar camel fair falls in the months of October and November.
Pushkar is home to the only Brahma temple in India and the Savithri temple of Pushkar is one of the most renowned temples among the shrines of Pushkar.
The Pushkar fair is mainly cattle fair, yet there are some rituals related to this festival. Lakh of pilgrims and foreign tourists visit Pushkar to have a holy bath on the Pushkar Lake which is said to have cleansed the soul. The Hindu sadhus and believers throng the Pushkar Lake during the festival.
There are some myths related to Pushkar holy town. People have a belief that God comes down to Pushkar to bless the worshippers on an auspicious day of Pushkar Fair. So, Hindus have a great devotion to the Pushkar camel fair.
Pushkar fair is celebrated with great fun and gaiety. The villagers sale and exchange their cattle at this fair. Various stalls are seen on the roads. The festival begins with offerings to Lord Brahma. Various cattle events and camel race are held in this fair which enchants the international tourists. Pushkar fair is the only festival in the world which attracts lakh of international tourists. There is sizzling mood of dance and music at the festival ground.
Jaipur is the nearest city to Pushkar. One has to drive or fly to Jaipur first to reach the Pushkar Fair.
