Camel is known as the ship of the desert, and it has a respectable position in the social and cultural life of the people of Rajasthan. Without camel Rajasthan cannot be imagined. Symbolic of strength and beauty, camels are important part of desert life of Rajasthan. Bikaner city has the only camel breeding centre of India and it is the largest in Asia. Since ages camel is the main mode of transportation in Bikaner. The Bikaner camel festival is conducted jointly by the Rajasthan Tourism Department and Art and Culture Association of Rajasthan.
The camel festival is held at the Junagarh Fort of Bikaner. At this festival hordes of camels are seen brought by the owners for sale. The festival is complimented by several competitions such as tug-of-war, camel dance, acrobatics, best camel breed and camel race. The stalls sale various handicrafts such as bridle jewellery, jingling anklets, neck pieces, home decors and many more.
In between the months of October and March this festival is held in Bikaner. The unique feature of this camel fair is the camel dance which is indeed a feast to the eyes. The travelers coming from various regions of the word are fascinated to see this mega event. The beautifully decorated camel takes part in a procession tuned by music and dance.
